Each year, Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17) brings attention to an ongoing crisis in the United States. The alarming rates of maternal mortality and morbidity among Black women have sparked urgent discussions about the systemic issues contributing to these disparities. Research indicates that Black women are three to four times more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and childbirth compared to their white counterparts.
Experts emphasize the importance of culturally competent care as a crucial factor in addressing these disparities. This approach involves understanding the unique experiences and challenges faced by Black women, ensuring that healthcare providers are equipped to offer empathetic and informed support. Education, advocacy, and policy changes are essential in creating a healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of all mothers.
